The Studio Club – 12th March

Firstly, a massive THANK YOU to everyone that came to our very first Studio Club last month. It was really encouraging to see so many people interested in learning more about studio work – we hadn’t expected quite so many local photographers and it was a pleasure to put faces to names. We had some great feedback about the mini workshop on basic studio lighting setups and fittings, and we’ve loved seeing the results of your tests from the evening. You can check some of them out on our Facebook group, and anyone that attends the club is welcome to tag us!

This month we will be running a mini work shop on speedlight work. The evening will consist of us running through some simple / easy to learn speedlight techniques for shooting portraits that you can use in the studio or on location. Plus, we’ve listened to your “Wish List” for the Studio Club, and we’ll be dedicating a little bit of down time to network and socialise too. Tea, coffee and snacks are provided, but if you fancied bringing a cake along with you – well, we wouldn’t say no.

We’re expecting a large turnout for this workshop so – although it’s an open invitation event – we will be putting a cap of 20 people for this session and all places will need to be confirmed.

Black Black Hills

You may have seen a version of this promo out and about in support of the very excellent Brighton band, Black Black Hills (it was actually taken way back when the lads were called Pope Joan.)

As well as accruing a slew of positive reviews, Black Black Hills are now also releasing a 7″ through Brighton label Friendly Dinner Records. Details of the release are available through Brighton’s Source magazine’s lovely new website.

Playboy Model Holly Gibbons, presents… Glamour School – Sunday, March 4th

Are you interested in becoming a glamour or fashion model but don’t really know where or how to make a start? On Sunday 4th March, Lion Work Studios in Eastbourne,are bringing in Internationl Playboy model Holly Gibbons who will present her Glamour School.

Holly will detail how she got into the glamour & fashion modeling industry and offer tips and practical advice that she’s learned as her career has developed. Holly’s advice will cover How To Sell Yourself & some of the key things you Should and Shouldn’t Do on the path to becoming a professional model.

After the initial sit down, Holly will demonstrate and teach Posing Techniques, followed by a live photoshoot. (Holly will only be teaching up to lingere level. We WILL NOT be shooting nude or topless work).

This class is all about giving you the confidence you need to springboard into the industry. You will be encouraged to take part in the photoshoot yourself, by Holly with step by step posing advice as the shoot goes on. At the end of the session, the images will be reviewed with her critique.

You will receive one professionally edited image from the class to start your portfolio off!

Jumping Ships

Jumping Ships surely have to be one of Brighton’s hardest working bands. With constant touring, recording and now – a brand new drummer – we just can’t work out where they get the energy from! When Kerrang! called the band for a new promo to support the digital release of an exclusive new track, the band got in touch with us.

Lead vocalist Mike had a vision of Origami Birds flying above the bands’ heads. After some swift mind-mapping (during which, Close Encounters featured heavily) and juggling schedules, the promo was shot – at 12am in Mikes flat!

Considering the boy’s had never made Origami Birds before we were very impressed with how well they’d turned out. BRAVO!

It’s so easy to sit back at home or work and talk with other photographers through Flickr/Facebook etc… Sometimes though, nothing beats meeting face to face with your fellow photographers.

We want to get you away from your computer for 2 hours every month and into Lion Works for a little studio time at The Studio Club.

The first studio club will cover a run through of flash head fittings (soft boxes, snoots, barn doors, high key reflectors, beauty dish etc…) to give you a basic understanding of each fitting’s purpose.

Jon Gray Masterclass – 14th/15th April @ Lion Works Studios

Lion Works is massively excited to be hosting photographer Jon Gray on the 14th and 15th of April. Jon will be running his world renowned Masterclass workshop and his Beauty & Glamour workshop over the course of the weekend!

Jon runs workshops across the UK and globally for Calumet and has sponsorship arrangements, with Bowens lighting; Mamiya Cameras; Phase One; and Lastolite, who all support his lectures and workshops. His wide range of Professional experience is applied to teaching international students worldwide and fellow Professionals. He has produced several photographic lighting books, recently published The Complete guide to Beauty & Glamour Photography and is a lecturer at The American Intercontinental University.

Minor Sounds

New Models

Tests will involve 3 different sets to work out how versatile the model is. Models should have at least 1 year experience and have an online portfolio.

Twitter Winner

Last Summer, Erin O’Connor won our lucky dip Follower competition on Twitter. As the winner, she got to pick a shoot or studio time at Lion Works.

Erin decided to use her studio time to develop her lighting skills with a series of photos paying homage to shots by Duffy and Bailey.

Arriving with beautiful model Marta Wolniak and a suitcase full of pink, Erin first set up this gorgeous bubble gum pink Mad-Men-esque shot.

Her second set was shot on both digital and film and produced some beautiful images.

Erin said, “There is nothing quite like sharing an idea with people and letting them help you bring it to life. This shot seemed like it was going to be the hardest one to create, but it turned out to be shockingly effortless.”

Well done Erin!

The Christmas Spirits

Earlier this month we teamed up with The Progress Film Company at Lion Works to light a trailer for the book The Christmas Spirits by Whitley Strieber.

The Christmas Spirits is a retelling of Dickens’s classic A Christmas Carol and brings the story to the 21st century. The book follows George Moore, a futures analyst, as he receives three visitors on Christmas Eve, just as Scrooge was visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. But these are not the ghosties and spirited that frightened Dickens’s readers. George’s visitors are more ambiguous and all the more frightening to the modern sensibility because of it.

The shoot was broken up into two parts.
The morning was spent shooting green screen shots.
